About the Artist
Margaret Kalvar Bushnell
Margaret Kalvar-Bushnell, b. 1957, studied Art History at Wellesley College while majoring in Economics. She studied water color painting at the State University of New York at Purchase during the summer of 1976. She pursued a career in finance after graduation, while continuing to draw and paint. During the 1990s, while raising her children, she studied with Michael Madigan and Hannah Fink at Artworks in Trenton. She had works accepted at the Ellarslie Open in 1994, at TAWA at Ellarslie 1995, and at TAWA's Warehouse exhibit in 1995. In May of 1996, she had a solo show at the Plainsboro Public Library, entitled Abstraction in Action, and participated in a group show at the Twin Rivers Library in 1997.
She resumed painting studies in 2017 with Charles Viera at the Princeton Arts Councl. Her pastel submissions to the Mercer County Senior Artist show have won awards in each of the last six years. She had two works on paper accepted into every Philips Mill Juried show from 2020-2026. She had three works accepted into the 2022 Ellarslie Open and one into the 2026 show. She is a regular partcipant in the West Windsor Arts Council juried shows, including their most recent exhibition and one in which her entry received an Honorable Mention. In September 2022 she had a solo show of 30 works at the Present Day Club in Princeton. Her works were included in Charles Viera's shows for his advanced students in 2019 and 2025. She has sold works privately and from the many exhibits in which she has participated' including the 2024 and 2025 YWCA's Breast Cancer Research Benefit show. She continues to explore color and composition in landscapes, portraits and still lifes in oil and pastels.
